Clearview Compact vs Next Gen: Which Towing Mirror Is Right for Your Setup?

July 2026 6 min read

It's the question most people ask when they first start looking at Clearview mirrors: Compact or Next Gen?

They're the two most popular ranges, they're both excellent mirrors, and they're both ADR compliant. But they're not the same mirror — and the right one for you depends on what you're towing, how you tow it, and what your vehicle already has.

This is a straightforward breakdown. No marketing fluff, just the practical differences.

Compact

Streamlined, OEM-style profile. Single large convex mirror. Widest factory feature compatibility. Best for regular towers who want everyday practicality.

Next Gen

Clearview's flagship. Twin mirror design — flat plus convex. Broadest rearward and side visibility. Best for frequent towers and larger caravan setups.

If you're still not sure which one after reading this, call Mason at ACS on 0455 871 776. Tell him your vehicle and your van and he'll give you a straight answer.

Mirror Glass: Single vs Twin

This is the most obvious difference between the two ranges.

Compact — single large convex mirror

The Compact uses one large convex mirror. Convex glass curves outward, giving you a wide-angle view — you see more in a single glance. The trade-off is a slight distortion of distance — objects appear a little further away than they are. For most everyday towing situations, the single convex mirror more than does the job.

Next Gen — twin mirror design (flat + convex)

The Next Gen uses two mirrors: a larger flat mirror on top and a convex mirror below. The flat mirror shows you distance accurately — no distortion — while the convex mirror handles the wide-angle view. Together, you get both distance clarity and peripheral coverage simultaneously.

This is the main reason experienced towers prefer the Next Gen for larger caravans. You're not choosing between wide vision or accurate distance — you get both at once.

Physical Profile

Compact

The Compact is designed to look like a factory mirror. When retracted, it sits flush to your vehicle and is difficult to distinguish from a standard mirror. This matters to owners who spend a lot of time driving without a van attached — it doesn't change the look of the vehicle day-to-day.

Next Gen

The Next Gen has a larger footprint. The twin mirror housing is more visually prominent, and it's clear it's a towing mirror. When retracted it still sits close to the vehicle, but it's not going to look factory.

Whether this matters to you is personal. Most owners who tow frequently say they stop noticing after the first week.

Factory Feature Compatibility

Both ranges retain compatible factory mirror features. This is one of Clearview's biggest advantages over cheap clip-ons — your blind spot monitoring, 360° cameras, indicators, heated glass, power fold, and memory positions all carry over, depending on your vehicle.

One distinction worth knowing: the Compact supports puddle lights on some applications; the Next Gen lists this as optional. Both support the full feature set including BSM, 360° camera provision, auto-tilt on reverse, OAT sensor, and memory.

Important

Clearview mirrors can only retain features your vehicle already has. They do not add new functions. If your vehicle doesn't have factory power fold, a Clearview with power fold capability won't give you power fold.

Which Vehicles Does Each Suit?

Both ranges are available for the same broad vehicle list — Toyota HiLux, LandCruiser, Prado, Ford Ranger, Everest, Isuzu D-Max, MU-X, Mitsubishi Triton, Pajero Sport, Nissan Navara, Patrol, Mazda BT-50, RAM 1500, VW Amarok, GWM Cannon, and more.

The right range often comes down to the specific variant and year of your vehicle, not just the make and model. This is where the pre-fit consult at ACS matters — Mason checks your exact vehicle configuration before recommending or ordering anything.

Price Difference

Next Gen from

$835

Compact from

$785

The difference at entry level is unlikely to be the deciding factor for most buyers.

Final pricing varies by vehicle and chosen features. Both include free fitting at ACS — a $150 value included with every mirror purchase.

So Which One Should You Choose?

Choose the Compact if:

  • You want the mirror to look OEM when you're not towing
  • You tow regularly but not every single weekend
  • You're towing a standard caravan or boat trailer
  • Everyday practicality matters as much as towing performance

Choose the Next Gen if:

  • You tow frequently — weekends, long trips, school holidays
  • You're pulling a larger or wider caravan
  • You want the absolute best rear vision available
  • You're not fussed about the mirror's visual profile when retracted

What About the Classic? The Clearview Classic starts from $529 and offers a simpler feature set — flat and convex glass, electric adjustment, heated glass, indicators, black finish only. No power fold, BSM, or camera support. It's a solid option if your vehicle doesn't have those features from factory anyway, or if you want a reliable towing mirror without paying for capabilities you won't use. For older models or workhorse utes with basic mirror setups, the Classic often makes the most sense.

The Honest Summary

The Next Gen is the better towing mirror. Twin glass, broadest visibility, flagship build. If towing performance is your priority, it's the one to get.

The Compact is not far behind — and for many owners, the OEM profile and everyday practicality tips the balance. It's genuinely excellent for most towing setups.

The best way to decide is a 10-minute conversation with someone who knows both. Mason has fitted all three ranges across a wide range of vehicles and can tell you quickly which one suits your setup.
